A survey of international addiction researchers’ views on implications of brain-based explanations of addiction and the responsibility of affected persons

Aim: To complement existing stakeholder surveys by exploring addiction researchers’ views on the implications of brain-based explanations and responsibilities addicted persons. Methods: A total 190 researchers from 29 countries (13.2%) participated in a LimeSurvey. Their perspectives were explored qualitatively using open-ended questions. In addition, respondents could indicate their responsibility individuals for condition actions Likert scale free-text field (“mixed methods light”). Qualitative analyses inductively identified most frequent themes deductively assessed overall impact (positive, negative or both/ambivalent). Quantitative included frequencies proportions. Results: The major mentioned medicalisation neglect other factors, better treatment options access, (reduced) stigma (impaired) agency affected evaluation yielded 46% positive, 33% 16% ambivalent views. Approximately 60% participants considered persons to be responsible 80% actions. Conclusions: According researchers, approach addictions has positive implications. particular, factors than biomedical seems concern. Thus, re-consideration research priorities as well individuals’ role care warranted.
